British cyclist Finlay Tarling has died at the age of 19 following a fatal incident during the Volta a Portugal on Friday, Aug. 14. The Welsh rider was competing for the NSN Development Team when he was involved in a collision with a vehicle during Stage 8.The 166.8-kilometre stage ran from Melgaço to Fafe. Tarling was a time trial specialist who joined the NSN Development Team in 2025 and had represented Great Britain in road and track cycling.

The incident happened midway through Stage 8, bringing the race to a halt. Tarling was involved in a collision with a vehicle, although the exact circumstances have not been officially confirmed.Per Sky News, Tarling was hit by a non-race car that entered the road. Portuguese broadcaster RTP also reported that he was struck by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.Cyclingnews reported that a driver unaffiliated with the race had reportedly entered the route, but stressed that the details were yet to be officially confirmed. The Volta a Portugal organisers and Portuguese Cycling Federation later neutralised the stage until Fafe. The scheduled podium ceremony was also cancelled as a mark of respect.“The organisation of the Volta a Portugal and the Portuguese Cycling Federation express their most heartfelt condolences to the family of Finlay Tarling, to his teammates, to the NSN Development Team, and to all his friends and loved ones,” organisers said.Tarling’s team also confirmed his death.“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal today,” NSN Development Team said. “Fin was a much-loved member of our team but most importantly, he was a son, a brother, and a friend to so many.”
Finlay Tarling career highlights: A promising young rider
Despite being just 19, Tarling had already collected several notable results. He won silver in the team pursuit at the 2023 Junior European Track Championships and finished runner-up at the 2023 Junior Chrono des Nations.In 2024, he won team pursuit gold at the British Cycling National Track Championships and claimed three bronze medals at the UCI Junior Track World Championships. He also finished second in the British junior time trial championships.Tarling continued progressing at senior level, finishing second on Stage 6 of the 2026 Tour du Rwanda. His older brother, Josh Tarling, is also a professional cyclist.British Cycling performance director Stephen Park highlighted his potential. “Fin was a talented rider with a fantastic future ahead of him, a loyal teammate and an all-round brilliant young man,” Park said.

UCI president David Lappartient said Tarling was a young rider with “his whole future ahead of him” and called his death a profound tragedy for his family, teammates and the cycling community.Portuguese President António José Seguro expressed his “deep sorrow” and said Tarling’s death had left the peloton, the race and Portugal in mourning. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro also offered condolences to his family, team and fellow riders.Several teams and riders shared condolences online. For NSN, Tarling was more than a cyclist. He was remembered as a son, brother, teammate and friend. His promising career has been tragically cut short at just 19.
