India’s ambition of winning the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup will face its first major test when they take on world No. 3 England in a crucial Pool D clash on Monday. After opening their campaign with a 3-1 win over Wales, India will face a significantly tougher challenge against an England side that began its campaign with an impressive 4-1 victory over Pakistan. The 32-year wait for a World Cup win over their European rivals adds extra significance to the contest. With both teams targeting the top two positions in Pool D, Monday’s result could have a major bearing on their route to the knockout stages.Under the new World Cup format, the top two teams from each pool advance to the second stage, where they are regrouped into Pools E and F. The result against the team they have already faced in the first round is carried forward, making every point particularly valuable.

India need sharper finishing

India’s opening win over Wales provided plenty of encouragement but also exposed areas that need improvement. Harmanpreet Singh converted two penalty corners, while Sanjay also scored from a set piece, but India’s forwards struggled to make the most of their opportunities from open play.Abhishek and Sukhjeet created openings but could not finish them, while India’s intensity dropped after a strong start. They scored twice in the first quarter but failed to maintain the same tempo thereafter. That could prove costly against England, who are expected to provide fewer opportunities and punish defensive lapses. Harmanpreet was influential at both ends against Wales, but India will need greater coordination, sharper finishing and sustained intensity in their second Pool D outing.“We have come well prepared and the team is in form. We will focus on taking it match by match and creating as many scoring opportunities as possible,” Harmanpreet had said, reflecting India’s approach ahead of the tournament.

England arrive in strong form

England have been among the more consistent sides in recent international hockey. They lost only two of their 16 matches in the 2025-26 Pro League and finished runners-up behind Belgium, while India finished eighth among nine teams. The two sides had closely fought encounters in the London leg of the Pro League before the World Cup, with both teams winning a penalty shootout and earning bonus points.England have also been regular contenders at the World Cup, reaching at least the quarterfinals in each of the last five editions since 2006. History, meanwhile, is firmly against India. Their last World Cup victory over England came in 1994, when they won the fifth-sixth-place match in Sydney by a solitary goal.England then defeated India in three successive World Cups between 2002 and 2010, while their most recent meeting in 2023 ended in a goalless draw.India will hope the three-day training camp in Switzerland before the tournament has helped them prepare for high-pressure matches. With Pakistan awaiting them on August 19, a win over England would put India in a strong position to advance and provide an important boost to their title ambitions. A defeat, however, would make the battle for the top two places considerably tighter.
