For fines only or to charity or for a yacht idk…,” Cunningham wrote on the GoFundMe page.The joke quickly caught on with her supporters. Over the next five days, 171 people donated to the fundraiser. Contributions ranged from $5 to $2,699, and the total eventually reached $10,182.That was when Cunningham decided the money would take a different path. “A yacht would be nice, but whatever we raise here will be going directly to Ronald McDonald House Charities. I’ll take care of my own fines. Y’all are the best,” Cunningham wrote in an update on the GoFundMe page, according to the Indianapolis Star’s Oct. 10, 2025 report.The decision came after a season in which Cunningham had become increasingly vocal about her frustrations with the WNBA. She had received multiple fines after speaking publicly about league officiating.In an August episode of her podcast, Show Me Something, Sophie Cunningham explained her disciplinary record with a joke of her own.“I’m officially 3-for-3 on being fined by the WNBA,” she said during the episode.She also explained why she continued to speak out, saying, “I promise you, everyone in our league feels that way and I’m just kind of the only one who says something.”So the fundraiser made sense at the moment. Sophie Cunningham first encountered Ronald McDonald House Charities as a teenager.Ronald McDonald House Charities helps families stay close to their children while they receive medical treatment. Its programmes provide places to stay, meals and other support for families facing difficult medical situations. Cunningham’s donation therefore went toward a cause that helps families during some of the hardest moments of their lives.On 2015, the Columbia Missourian reported on Cunningham’s visit to a Ronald McDonald House in Chicago while she prepared for the McDonald’s All-American Game. She met Brian and Jennifer Godish and their four-year-old son, Bradley, who had leukemia. Cunningham played with Bradley, built wooden train tracks with him and joined other children for basketball. She also volunteered to visit children who could not leave the hospital.“It makes me smile because this is how my parents raised me, and I’m just a little bit of who they are. I just want to share that with all these little kids and their parents,” Cunningham told the Columbia Missourian during that 2015 visit.Ten years later, she was once again giving to the same organisation.
