From 'DC' to 'Athiradi': South Indian cinema embraces style over substance
From ‘DC’ to ‘Athiradi’_ South Indian cinema embraces style over substance

South Indian cinema has continued to produce films that prioritise visual impact and theatrical entertainment. In 2026, movies such as ‘Kaattalan’, ‘Athiradi’, ‘DC’ and ‘Blast’ have followed different versions of this style-driven approach. These movies do not necessarily depend on complicated narratives. Instead, they use action, music, humour, performances and presentation to keep audiences engaged.

‘Kattalan’ – Style over substance entry from Mollywood

Antony Varghese’s ‘Kaattalan’ is one example for a style-over-substance action thriller. The movie has faced criticism for its familiar gangster elements, extended slow-motion sequences and loud background score. The film began streaming on ManoramaMAX on August 13, 2026. The story is set around Aanakolli, where fear spreads after elephants force their way out of the forest. Maari arrives as a possible protector, but his presence soon creates another threat for the villagers. As the situation worsens, the community starts waiting for another saviour. Antony Varghese plays the central character in the movie.

‘Athiradi’ finds entertainment in familiar territory

‘Athiradi’ takes a more comic and celebratory approach. The movie revolves around Sam, an engineering student determined to bring back his college’s popular Arohan fest.At the same time, retired goon Kuttan wants to start a new chapter in his life through music at a temple festival. Their separate ambitions eventually collide, setting off a chain of humorous and chaotic events.Basil Joseph and Tovino Thomas play rivals in the movie. ETimes praised Arun Anirudhan’s directorial debut, writing, “Director Arun Anirudhan, known for co-writing Minnal Murali, makes an impressive debut filled with confidence and swagger. Written alongside Paulson Skaria, the film may not offer a completely fresh storyline. Campus politics, festivals, gang clashes, and friendship dramas are familiar territory. However, what makes Athiradi work is its energy, humour, emotional connect, and unapologetic entertainment value.”

‘DC’ impresses with music and action

Lokesh Kanagaraj‘s acting debut ‘DC’ also falls into the style-driven category. The film’s appeal has been strengthened by its action sequences, songs and Anirudh Ravichander’s background score.Directed by Arun Matheswaran, the movie features Lokesh Kanagaraj as Devadas. Wamiqa Gabbi plays Chandra, while Sanjana Krishnamoorthy portrays Parvathy. The narrative centres on Devadas and the impact of violence, revenge and personal loss on his life. One of the film’s major sequences arrives before the interval, when Devadas launches a violent assault while attempting to save Chandra and seek revenge for Parvathy. At the same time, the film’s writing provides clear motivations for its characters. This allows the action and visual presentation to remain connected to the emotional elements of the story.

‘Blast’ packs its runtime with action

Tamil movie ‘Blast’ is another example of a film that puts spectacle and entertainment at the centre, over a complicated story line. The movie stars Arjun Sarja, Abhirami and Preity Mukhundhan. The story may not be particularly elaborate, but the film maintains momentum through frequent action sequences. It features three main villains and a family of karate practitioners played by Arjun Sarja, Abhirami and Preity Mukhundhan. The movie is now available on OTT platforms. ETimes highlighted its attention to visual details and character arcs, writing, “Much of Blast’s charm lies in its frames, dialogues, and character arcs. When Nila takes up karate classes, she is gifted a teddy bear. While you see her go and hug the bear, the film immediately cuts to her using it like a punching dummy for karate practice. Although she fights and lands repeatedly in trouble, we see Nila hesitate to hit someone every once in a while. But Arjun almost always pushes her to do the right thing, and sometimes, these happen just in action, with no words communicating the support.”The review added, “In Blast, there are several intro sequences, an action block every five minutes, three main villains, and a family of karate fighters– yet every scene is stitched together with such detailing, resulting in a blast of a theatrical experience.”Together, these movies prove that a simple story does not necessarily prevent a film from becoming an engaging theatrical experience. It all matter in how the director is presenting a story in an engaging manner.
