The US government became the largest single shareholder in Intel on August 22, 2025, after announcing an $8.9 billion agreement to acquire a 9.9% equity stake (433.3 million shares) in the company. It’s been almost a year since then. In what can be called as an unprecedented shift in the US industrial policy, the federal government acquired an approximate 10% equity stake in Intel Corporation, instantly becoming the semiconductor giant’s largest single shareholder.The transaction is part of a broader, sweeping initiative in which Washington is taking equity positions in 30 publicly traded companies spanning key economic sectors.
