N Chandrasekaran, who has decided to step down as Tata Sons chairman, told employees to ignore the speculation and conspiracy theories circulating over the group’s leadership transition. Earlier today, N Chandrasekaran announced that he will not seek another term as chairman of Tata Sons after his current tenure expires in February 2027. This brings to a close a nine-year stint leading the conglomerate.Speaking at a town hall meeting held at Bombay House in the afternoon, Chandrasekaran reportedly said he had been “touched with the love and affection” shown to him by employees throughout his career and looked back on his 40-year journey with the Tata Group.“As you might have read or be aware, am not seeking reappointment after February 2027 as term comes to an end,” he told the gathering, according to a PTI report.Having spent four decades with the conglomerate, Chandrasekaran said he had never imagined his career would unfold the way it had, while acknowledging that every professional journey eventually reaches its conclusion and another leader would take over.

Referring to the discussion around his decision to step down, Chandrasekaran urged employees, “Do not pay much attention to the gossip, theories, conspiracies that you hear.”He concluded the interaction on a personal note, saying he hoped to get to know more employees individually instead of meeting them only occasionally through informal interactions or group gatherings.According to people familiar with the meeting, Chandrasekaran received a standing ovation and left the hall to thunderous applause. In an earlier statement, Chandrasekaran said that the decision to step down came after a six-month deadlock that followed the failure of a proposal to extend his tenure by five years to secure unanimous approval at the Tata Sons board meeting held on February 24. Chandrasekaran added that he had asked the board to identify his successor at the earliest to ensure a smooth leadership transition. Also Read | From trainee to Tata chairman: The remarkable rise of Ratan Tata’s pick N Chandrasekaran
