‘Ramayana’ actor Kunal Kapoor remembers ‘Rang De Basanti’ experience on Independence Day, reveals what the cult classic taught him: ‘What stayed with me was the idea that the country isn’t something you inherit’

As India celebrates its 80th Independence Day, actor Kunal Kapoor has taken a trip down memory lane, reflecting on his experience of working on Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra‘s cult classic ‘Rang De Basanti’. Released in 2006, the film continues to hold a special place among audiences, with its performances, music and powerful themes remaining memorable nearly two decades later. Kunal Kapoor, who portrayed Aslam Khan and freedom fighter Ashfaqulla Khan in the film, recalled that the atmosphere on set never felt like a conventional film shoot.

Kunal Kapoor remembers the camaraderie on set

Looking back at the making of ‘Rang De Basanti’, Kapoor said the experience was driven more by friendship and shared enthusiasm than the feeling of being part of a major production. Speaking with the Free Press Journal, the actor shared, “Rang De Basanti didn’t feel like a film while we were making it. It felt like hanging out with friends, making something you really enjoy and believe in. Nobody knew it would still resonate so much, 20 years later.”The film went on to become one of the defining releases of its time, with its ensemble cast and emotionally charged storytelling leaving a lasting impression on viewers.Kapoor’s portrayal of Aslam was marked by a restrained rebelliousness, allowing him to stand out even while sharing the screen with established performers including Aamir Khan. Reflecting on what he personally carried forward from the film, the actor said its central idea about one’s relationship with the country became more meaningful with time.“What stayed with me wasn’t the anger or rebelliousness. It was the idea that the country isn’t something you inherit, it’s something you’re responsible for. That’s aged well.”For Kapoor, that thought remains relevant even after 20 years and continues to shape how he looks at the film.

Kunal Kapoor keeps Independence Day simple

The actor also revealed how he plans to spend Independence Day this year. Rather than attending elaborate celebrations, Kapoor said he intends to keep the occasion centred around family before returning to professional commitments.“No grand plans this year. There’s a flag hoisting in the complex, which is always lovely. Family in the day, back at work by evening.”For Kapoor, the idea of independence extends beyond its national significance. He believes it also involves having the courage to remain authentic and follow one’s convictions despite uncertainty about how others might respond.“Independence to me is doing what you believe in, even when you’re not sure how it’ll be received. Not just as a country but also as a person. To be able to live in a way that’s most authentic to you,” he concluded.

What’s next for Kunal Kapoor?

Kunal Kapoor will be seen portraying Lord Indra (Indra Dev) in Nitesh Tiwari’s ambitious multi-part epic adaptation of the Ramayana. The film features a star-studded cast, including Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi and Yash in pivotal roles. The first instalment, Ramayana: Part 1, is slated to arrive in Indian theatres on November 8, 2026, coinciding with Diwali, while its international release is scheduled for November 6, 2026. The second part is expected to release during Diwali 2027.
