In a quiet garden in Seaton, near Looe in Cornwall, something unusual is happening. A banana plant, once a tiny gift, has grown to 11 feet tall and produced 24 pieces of fruit. Over the years, the plant grew taller and stronger.This summer, after a prolonged heatwave, it did something remarkable: It flowered and produced 24 bananas. “I was really surprised…I knew it could happen, but I know it’s unusual. It’s fantastic to see the plant doing what it’s supposed to do,” Cathy said, according to the BBC.The flower itself was impressive. “It’s quite an impressive flower, I’ve never seen one before. While banana plants can thrive in mild parts of the UK, it is very unusual for them to produce fruit outdoors. Peter Jones, director of horticulture at the Eden Project, confirmed that fruiting is rare. Meanwhile, Guy Barter, chief horticulturist at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), said bananas never used to flower in the UK 20 years ago. “The climate is getting warmer and bananas never used to flower 20 years ago,” Barter said. “It would be a red letter day when the banana flowered,” Barter said, according to the report.Cathy’s garden benefits from its location in a damp valley with plenty of moisture in the air, which helps the banana plant grow. But even with ideal conditions, fruiting is not guaranteed.A trend across the UKCathy is not alone. Across the country, other gardeners are reporting similar successes. The BBC reported in July 2026 that Peter and Emma Stav from Rayleigh, Essex, were amazed when their 200 banana plants began to bear fruit after 15 years. The Stavs have built walls around their plants to trap heat and create a “microclimate effect” for colder winter weather.“Over the past couple of winters I haven’t wrapped them up because they’re nearly 3m (10ft) tall, so it’s very difficult to wrap them… This year, due to the heatwave, the plant’s actually fruited,” Peter said, as per the BBC.In Suffolk, 76-year-old Stephen Hind was in “complete surprise” when his banana plant produced fruit for the first time.
