Meet Scarlett Tiani, the Connecticut student whose dog-safety invention reached US Nationals and earned a national award plus patent-application support
A pet safety system created by a Connecticut middle school student to protect postal workers, delivery drivers, neighbours, and pets has received national recognition and legal support for a US patent application.Scarlett Tiani, a sixth-grade student at West Rocks Middle School in Norwalk, created the Tail Wag Warning to help prevent unexpected encounters between dogs and people visiting a home.Her invention won two major honours at the 2026 Invention Convention U.S. Nationals, held at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Detroit.More than 305,000 students took part in the competition nationwide, but only 513 inventors reached the national showcase. Tiani was one of just four students selected to represent Norwalk Public Schools.According to updates from Norwalk Public Schools Communications, Tiani was also one of only five inventors in the entire competition to receive the Patent Application Award, sponsored by international law firm WilmerHale. The award is worth up to $10,000 and provides free legal advice, intellectual property support, and help with submitting an official patent application for her invention.Tiani also won the Industry Innovation Award for Animal Care and Pets (K–12). She received a trophy, a personalized certificate, and a $100 cash prize.
Smart warnings for postal workers and neighbours
The Tail Wag Warning is a multi-level warning system designed for homes with pets.Tiani first developed the idea as a fifth-grade student in Mrs. Santaniello’s gifted and talented classroom at Tracey Magnet School.The system uses a customizable mailbox magnet with important information about a pet. It also includes a QR code that provides more details digitally. A smart warning light can show when a dog is outside, giving mail carriers, delivery drivers, first responders, and neighbours a clear warning before they enter the yard or property.According to the school district, these visual warnings and quick-access information are designed to help prevent accidental dog bites, unexpected encounters, and pets escaping from the property.
Norwalk students succeed nationally
Tiani travelled to Detroit as part of a four-student team from Norwalk Public Schools. The students advanced through local showcases and the Connecticut State Competition at the University of Connecticut.According to Norwalk Public Schools Communications, her fellow students also performed well:
- Quinn Robertson: Inventor of The Focus Fleece, which received a national Honorable Mention.
- Francesca Siano: Inventor of the Skier Slip N’ Clip.
- Eliza Z.: Inventor of The EZ Cone.
Norwalk Public Schools also reported that another group of local students has already qualified at the Connecticut Invention Convention for the next national competition.The upcoming competitors include Owen Anderson and Elliot Contessa from Rowayton Elementary School, who created X-Net. Concord Magnet School students Cole Danburg, inventor of The Flavor Mixer, and Alexandra Kraft, inventor of A Skier’s Best Bud, also qualified.
From classroom idea to patent application
Moving from a school project to a patent application supported by professional lawyers is a major achievement for a young inventor.District officials described Tiani’s journey from a Tracey Magnet School student to a national award winner as an example of what curiosity, creativity, and determination can achieve.With legal support from WilmerHale secured through her national award, Tiani will now work with intellectual property lawyers to improve her documentation and formally submit the Tail Wag Warning to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
