Inspiring story of the day: “That’s my main goal, to try and be a better father than the one I had” : How LeBron James’ children gave him strength through the pressure, sacrifices and challenges of his NBA career

LeBron James became a father at just 19, when his NBA career was only beginning. He was already carrying the pressure that came with being the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NBA Draft and one of the biggest young stars in the league. Then, on Oct. 6, 2004, his first child, LeBron “Bronny” James Jr., was born. Becoming a father gave LeBron a new responsibility at an age when most young players were still focused only on building their careers. His own childhood made that responsibility even more personal. LeBron grew up primarily with his mother, Gloria James, and did not have his father in his life. He later explained that he did not know his father, and that experience influenced the kind of parent he wanted to become. Rather than allowing his own childhood to define him, LeBron used it as motivation to be present for his children. That promise stayed with him through the criticism, pressure, travelling and sacrifices that came with becoming one of the greatest players in NBA history.

How LeBron James turned growing up without his father into a promise to his children

LeBron has been open about the fact that he did not grow up knowing his father. When Bronny was born in 2004, LeBron was only 19 and preparing for his second NBA season with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was already dealing with enormous expectations after being selected first overall the previous year, but becoming a father gave him a responsibility that had nothing to do with basketball.“That’s my main goal, to try and be a better father than the one I had,” LeBron said at the time. “I didn’t know him. I didn’t know the situation he was in. But I’m going to do my job the best way I can. I’m excited about it. It’s a wonderful opportunity in life.”That quote is important because LeBron did not simply talk about wanting to be a good father. He connected his goal directly to his own childhood and the absence of his father. He knew what it was like not to have that relationship, and he wanted his children to experience something completely different. His family eventually grew to include three children, Bronny, Bryce and Zhuri, with Savannah James by his side. At the same time, LeBron’s NBA career became more demanding. He moved from Cleveland to Miami, returned to Cleveland, won championships and eventually joined the Los Angeles Lakers, all while spending a huge part of his life travelling for basketball. The demands of the NBA meant that LeBron could not be present for every moment of his children’s childhood. He later acknowledged that reality himself. After sharing the court with Bronny in 2024, he spoke about the time the league had taken away from his family.“It’s family. It’s always been family over everything,” LeBron said. “I lost a lot of time because of this league and committing to this league. Being on the road at times, missing a lot of his things, Bryce’s things, Zhuri’s things.”That admission showed that even after becoming one of the most successful athletes in the world, LeBron understood that there were some things basketball could never replace. How LeBron’s children helped him put NBA pressure into perspective during the hardest momentsThe importance of family became even clearer in July 2023, when Bronny suffered cardiac arrest during a workout at USC. The 18-year-old was hospitalised and later began his recovery, eventually returning to basketball. For LeBron, the frightening situation put basketball into perspective. When he spoke about Bronny’s recovery before the 2023-24 season, he said he would dedicate the season to his son.“Obviously, I’m gonna dedicate this season to Bronny,” LeBron said. “Understanding that puts everything in perspective.”He also described the period as a whirlwind of emotions for the family and spoke about how they supported Bronny through his recovery. For someone who had spent almost his entire adult life dealing with the pressure of professional basketball, the experience was a powerful reminder that family mattered more than anything happening on the court.LeBron also found motivation in watching his other children grow. In 2023, he coached Bryce during the Nike EYBL Peach Jam and spoke about enjoying the opportunity to watch young players compete simply because they loved the game. Being around Bryce and other young athletes allowed LeBron to see basketball from a different perspective after spending years under the pressure of the NBA.His family also helped him deal with the everyday demands of a career that has lasted more than two decades. In July 2026, LeBron spoke to kid reporter Jazlyn Guerra at Fanatics Fest about how he manages his professional life alongside his family. He credited Savannah with helping keep their household together while he is away working.“The best thing I have is, I have support,” LeBron said, adding that Savannah “does a great job” when he is away and calling her “the queen of the kingdom.”LeBron also acknowledged that his career has required sacrifices. He explained that when he was younger, he sometimes had to give up time with friends because he needed to train and prepare for the next day. That discipline helped create his NBA career, but his family gave those sacrifices a deeper purpose. The biggest example came when Bronny eventually followed him into professional basketball.

How LeBron James’ journey with Bronny brought his fatherhood promise full circle

When the Lakers selected Bronny with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, LeBron’s dream of playing alongside his son became a reality. On Oct. 22, 2024, LeBron and Bronny checked into the Lakers’ regular-season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves together, becoming the first father-son duo to play together in NBA history. For LeBron, the moment meant much more than another NBA record. He had become a father at 19, at a time when he was still trying to establish himself in the league. More than 20 years later, his son was standing beside him on an NBA court.“It’s always been family over everything,” LeBron said after the historic moment. He also described being able to work alongside Bronny as one of the greatest gifts he had received. The moment brought his fatherhood journey full circle. LeBron had grown up without his father being present in his life, yet he had spent his adult years trying to make sure his own children knew that he would be there for them. Even the NBA, which had taken him away from home for so many years, eventually gave him one of the most meaningful family moments of his career. That journey is still continuing. LeBron has now entered another chapter of his NBA career with the Philadelphia 76ers, while Bronny is beginning to establish himself as a professional player of his own. Bryce continues his basketball journey, and Zhuri is growing up while watching her father remain one of the biggest names in the sport. LeBron is still dealing with the demands that come with playing in the NBA after more than two decades, but his perspective has changed since he first entered the league. The teenager who once said his main goal was to become a better father than the one he had has now spent more than 20 years trying to live by that promise. His father’s absence was something LeBron could not change about his own childhood, but he could decide what kind of father he would be to his children. Through the pressure of becoming an NBA superstar, the sacrifices of a demanding career and one of the most frightening moments his family has faced, that promise has remained with him.And perhaps that is what makes LeBron’s fatherhood story more powerful than any statistic. He did not simply become a father while building an NBA legacy. He built that legacy while trying to give his children the childhood and presence he never had himself.
